The question was asked whether the available tool list can be controlled based on role. The answer is currently no. However, the list of available tools CAN be controlled based on the site type (course, project, myworkspace). We will likely use this mechansim to create a new site type (e.g. eportfolio) to have a unique set of tools for that application for Indiana University's production deployment.

An audience member reported that yesterday she created a site that had a few tools including "Home". The Home tool appeared at the bottom of the tool list in the site. I tested this against rc2 (HEAD) and could not reproduce.

The reason for this is that the site does not have the discussion, chat, or announcement tool, and so the Home page doesn't have the synoptic versions of those tools. The toolOrder.xml file has sakai.iframe at the bottom (which is the only tool on the site's home page). So the Home page is positioned according to the sakai.iframe position in the toolOrderr.xml, which is down toward the bottom. If you were to add the discussion tool, then the Home page would have the synoptic.discussion tool on it, and then the Home page would be at the top due to the location of the synoptic tools in the toolOrder.xml file.

You might have to remove and readd the Home tool after adding the discussion tool in order to get it to reset itself to include the synoptic.discussion tool.

That's just an explanation of the way it is working.
